Sep 2, 2023 · The term Jayhawk comes from the free-staters of Kansas during the Civil War. To this day, anyone born in Kansas is known by the same term that these free-staters went by, a Jayhawker. Pure_mercury, no L sound in "chalk". And judging from dictionary pronunciations, no L sound in it is the norm. Not honestly sure about palm. I can't be sure how I'd say that. Seems to me rockchalk and jayhawk would rhyme for most people, no cot/caught merger needed, but the cot/caught merger adds and extra rock/chalk rhyme.
